The client: The Department of Commerce and Labor, MWA for short, consolidates the political domains of economic affairs, labor, qualification and technology. With its 450 staff members the department bundles the forces which are necessary to give the necessary impulses to the business location NRW. The task: The Citrix Metaframe Presentation Server 3.0 is intended to simplify the administration of the IT-environment for the 450 staff members of the Department of Commerce and Labor, (MWA), and at the same time to redefine the standard for BK applications and to simplify the connection of teleworkplaces in the medium term. The goal of this consolidation of the IT infrastructure is a reduction of costs. A procedure in two stages has been chosen, now the complete application set being provided by Citrix in the first stage for about 70 % of the staff which has been working with Windows NT 4.0 Rich-Clients up to now. The personal computers will run with a centrally administered Linux operating system with ICA client that is started via the network. In the second stage the remaining users with special applications on their Rich-Clients will get the standard applications by means of Published Applications. The Department of Commerce and Labor entrusted sepago GmbH, a company that has already successfully implemented different large-scale Citrix projects, with the preparation of the concept and support at the pilot stage. The solution: The sepagoINSTALLER ensures the provision and the dynamic scaling of the Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server 3.0 environment at the MWA. The multistage conception permits a clearly defined and secure procedure for the initiation of applications via Citrix. If, in the first stage, an application is defined as ready for production it migrates via a corresponding Change into the client's productive environment. This kind of multiphase conception can only be reached by automatisms like those in the sepagoINSTALLER. Installation of the Windows Server 2003 Operating System Platform is independent of hardware and is carried out via an unattended setup; it works fully automatically and without any user interaction like the subsequent customizing or the installation of the Citrix Presentation Server Platform itself. In this case, the idea of a role-based installation is consistently pursued so that the client decides at a very early installation stage if, in future, the system is to be provided with a fileserver, a domain controller or, for example, a Citrix Presentation Server. Netinstall 5.7 SP2 from the company enteo carries out the entire customizing of the environment as well as the installation of the Citrix Metaframe Presentation Server 3.0, and the generation or joining of an existing farm. After this, all the applications are installed with Netinstall 5.7 and finally published fully automatically and hence provided for the users. In this way, the Department of Commerce and Labor is now able to test applications quickly and safely and to transfer them quality-assured to production. The implementing of adapted group guidelines ensures, apart from security and availability of the presentation servers, a maximum of performance, starting with the deliberate reduction of the size of the profile and ending with the use of the software guidelines of the Windows Server 2003. The sepagoLINUX-CLIENT is used as a replacement for the local operating system Windows NT 4.0. It is a reasonably priced alternative and can be booted via the network with minimal effort. It adapts itself to the hardware environment and is able to connect straightaway to any server farm thanks to the integrated ICA client. For this reason, the MWA does not need the expensive management of the Rich-Clients regarding virus protection and patch installation. Presently the MWA is in a pilot phase to optimize the outlined solution for productive operation.
