PowerShell: Manage Passwords and Credentials
This post is based on an article I wrote for the German print magazine “IT-Administrator”. It was published in February 2014.
If you want to automate tasks with Microsoft Windows, you’ll probably use Microsoft PowerShell. The usage is not limited to Microsoft products – many other software vendors like VMware or Citrix offer PowerShell interfaces for their products.
If you use PowerShell to connect to remote systems, you may have to submit user credentials. Therefore, many scripts contain a password in cleartext. This is neither secure nor necessary, because PowerShell provides a build-in alternative: the PSCredential object.
