About vCenter connections

The first step in automating tasks with VMware PowerCLI is to open a connection to an ESXi host or vCenter server. This post shows how to do that and a few things you should be aware of.

Connect-VIServer

To open a vCenter or ESXi connection in PowerCLI is very easy. Just start a PowerCLI console and enter the following command

Connect-VIServer -Server <Hostname or IP>

If you are logged on with a user that is allowed to connect to the vCenter server, the connection will be opened. Otherwise you will be promted to enter user credentials before a connection is established.
