Using a Syslog server with your ESXi hosts can save you a lot of time in troubleshooting because all logs are written to a central location. It’s even more important if the boot devices of your hosts are either non-redundant or non-local, because in case of a boot device failure, your host will stop writing logs at all.
Any Syslog implementation will do. If you don’t have a Syslog server yet, you can use the VMware vSphere Syslog Collector that comes with the vCenter-ISO. It’s a small tool you can install on any Microsoft Windows Server. Usually I choose the vCenter Server itself for that.
